Touring Bike

Hi! My friend and I are planning on riding from Tucuman to
Equador, leaving on the 15th of August. I am at the moment
without a bike and most of the required gear as i have just arrived
from australia. I was wondering if anyone knew of some great
places with touring bikes or even any opinions on what bike is best.
Also if someone has a second hand bike or any equipment it would
be of great interest to me. I am 2m tall though! Hope to hear from
anyone soon. thanks Gus

Hey Gus, glad to hear about your project. Do you read Spanish? If so, I'd recommend you check the site's Forum. There are a couple of threads about Touring bikes (or Hybrid ones, as we call them here) in it: http://www.bttbike.com/foro/viewforum.php?f=12 PM if you find any trouble finding the threads, I'll be more then happy to help you.

Sorry, I meant "PM ME if you find any trouble finding the threads, I'll be more then happy to help you". Guess I'm still too sleepy to type...

Hi Angus!!! Congrats for the journey you and your friend are startiting soon. Some random questions and reccomendations as they come to my mind:

- Learn spanish, all you can!!!
- Where are you standing here till' August? Tell us so we can give you some good places to start your search.
- Here you won't find touring specific bikes, a standard 26" XC bike is a good starting point. Get it in 20" or 21" size. We can give you further assistance.
- If the bike you get is second hand, make sure to full service it. Replace chain and sprockets, nevermind what the seller says about items wear.
- Get it ASAP!!! You have to get used to that bike, to ride for many hours with all your gear, water and food.
- PLAN your travel. Stages, routes, cities, clothing, food, etc. Post here so bikers who journey can read about his: http://www.btt.com.ar/galeria/viajes/
-
Important gear: Panniers (may be a trailer if you ride only on paved road), spare tubes, patches, spare tire (one at least), chain tool and quick links, perhaps a rear derraileur, chain oil, air pump, multitool, brake pads, cloth, water bottles & bottle holders (I wouldn't use camelback to keep the back light), sun protector, googles (spare too), obviously helmet and gloves, front and back lights, battery chargers, and the list is HUGE!!!

Tell me if you need more help, regards!!!

hi thanks for the help guys! I have now figured out i would like a mountain bike. i have looked all over buenos aires in all of the bike shops i could find and have found nothing for my size. As i am 2m tall i need a frame of 23". I am willing to have anything second hand or new, and would love it to have b breaks instead of disc due to the terrain and easy to fix aspect of a normal set of breaks. Would anyone know where to find a bike with these specs? Thanks for the help!

Gus
